Evans Chebet of Kenya won the New York City Long distance race men's race and Sharon Lokedi of Kenya came out on top in the ladies' race Sunday, the two of them shaking things up in their presentations.
Daniel Do Nascimento, who had been driving the whole men's race, imploded 21 miles in. Chebet completed in 2 hours, 8 minutes and 41 seconds, which was 13 seconds in front of second-place finisher Shura Kitata of Ethiopia.
Do Nascimento got out to a quick beginning on an unexpectedly warm day and drove by almost 2 minutes for a large portion of the race. The Brazilian imploded at Mile 21, just before he got once more into Manhattan, and was gone to by clinical experts. A couple of miles prior, he had required a fast 20-second restroom break.
Chebet, 33, pulled away from the pack pursuing Do Nascimento as they headed over the scaffold into Manhattan interestingly. After Do Nascimento's breakdown, Chebet started to lead the pack and never was undermined the remainder of the way. Chebet won the Boston Long distance race recently.
It was Lokedi's first-ever long distance race and she completed in quite a while, 23 minutes and 23 seconds — just a little ways off of Lonah Chemtai Salpeter of Israel. The 28-year-old Lokedi was in a tight race before she pulled in front of Chemtai Salpeter in the last two miles to win by seven seconds and polish around 50 seconds off the course record.
An hour sooner, the people's wheelchair races finished with course records being broken.
It was an unexpectedly warm day — with the temperature expected to take off into the 70s and conceivably challenge the record for the most blazing race since the long distance race moved to November in 1986.
Sharon Lokedi, Evans Chebet of Kenya win New York City Marathon
It was a dramatic Sunday morning at the New York City Marathon, where two first-time entrants from Kenya, Sharon Lokedi and Evans Chebet, emerged from a series of twists and lead changes to capture the women’s and men’s races, respectively.
In the ladies' race, Lokedi made a push in the last moment to guarantee her crown with a period of 2 hours 23 minutes 23 seconds. Lonah Chemtai Salpeter of Israel put second, seven seconds behind. The pair was essential for a four-man bunch that isolated itself in the back portion of the race. It was a shocking introduction execution from the 28-year-old Lokedi, who didn't begin running seriously until 2015.
"I'm out of words," Lokedi said on the ESPN broadcast after the race with a tone of doubt. "I'm simply glad to such an extent that I won."
